Council Infrastructure Committee to hear Main Street redesign plan 5 p.m. Thursday, June 16
The Hayward City Council Infrastructure Committee will receive a presentation and take public comment Thursday on updated plans for making downtown Main Street safer and more accessible for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians alike.
The meeting will take place virtually on Zoom beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 16, with information on how to attend and provide comment available here on the Main Street Complete Streets project page on the City of Hayward website.
Over the years, the City Council has taken several actions to ensure the City builds streets that are safe, convenient for travel regardless of age or ability, and accommodate motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, pedestrians and users of public transportation.
The proposed redesign of Main Street between D Street and McKeever Avenue would reduce the roadway from four to three lanes and create bike lanes along with on-site parking with door-zone protection for cyclists. It would improve ADA access with new curb ramps, shorten crosswalks by adding blub-outs at intersections, and introduce a sustainably landscaped buffer between sidewalk and road.
The redesign will result in a reduction of through traffic lanes from two to one in each direction with a center lane to allow left turns into driveways and temporary parking for delivery trucks.
