$26 million in street repair and upgrades approved for new fiscal year
The City Council has approved $26 million for street and roads preventative maintenance, repair and improvement projects for the 2019 fiscal year that began July 1.
Fiscal Year 2019 street and roads work will be led by completion of Phase 2 Mission Boulevard upgrades from Industrial Boulevard to the southern city limit. In addition to roadway reconstruction, Mission Boulevard Phase 2 includes new median landscaping, sidewalks, greenway extensions, and installation of bike paths and pedestrian-path lighting.
Additionally, the FY 2019 program calls for repair, resurfacing and rehabilitation of dozens of other sections of city streets at a cost of $8.4 million provided through gas tax, county Measures B and BB sales tax, vehicle registration fee, and state Road Repair and Accountability Act (SB 1) funds.
Rehabilitation of severely deteriorated streets involves a technique called Hot-Mix Asphalt surfacing, frequently in combination with removal and recycling of layers of roadway. Preventative maintenance of streets in fair condition entails micro-surfacing techniques to preserve, protect and extend pavement life.
The final project list is under review by consultants to the city's Department of Public Works and will be presented to the City Council later this year in connection with project contract awards.
