Hayward City Council adopts 2020 Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan
On Sept. 29, the Hayward City Council adopted the 2020 Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan (BPMP), which details the City’s plans to establish a network of accessible, safe, and integrated bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
The 2020 BPMP replaces and builds on the City’s original 2007 Bicycle Master Plan with its inclusion of pedestrian-centered facilities and extensive public input. The new plan recommends a total of 153 miles of new bicycle facilities, including 32 miles of multi-use paths for both pedestrians and cyclists.
In addition to expanding mobility options, the improvements identified in the Plan will help reduce the environmental impacts of Hayward’s transportation sector by reducing the community’s reliance on vehicles.
EPA data shows that the transportation sector continues to be the largest U.S. producer of greenhouse gases (followed closely by electricity). Light duty vehicles like passenger cars are a key culprit behind these emission levels, accounting for 60 percent of nation-wide transportation emissions. Initiatives like the 2020 BPMP provide Hayward community members a more dynamic, connected, and sustainable means to get around town.
