Hayward residents schedule all-time-high number of bulky waste pickups in 2020 despite two-month COVID closure
Hayward’s Bulky Item Pick Up program, a free service offered to residential properties, has seen growing popularity since the program expanded six years ago. Last year, residents scheduled 12,624 appointments to dispose of their old furniture, appliances, and other large waste items – breaking records, despite a brief program hiatus during April and May due to COVID-19.
Hayward single-family households have access to two free Bulky Item Pickups per calendar year, provided by Waste Management, the City’s waste hauler. Taking advantage of the service is as simple as calling (510) 537-5500 and scheduling an appointment for curbside pickup. Hayward residents in duplexes, triplexes, and four-plexes can also schedule a bulky item pickup by calling (510) 537-5500. Residents in larger multi-family properties can schedule a bulky item pickup through their property manager.
Certain items, like household hazardous waste and construction debris, are not eligible to be collected through the bulky program. For a complete list of eligible items and more information about the program, visit www.hayward-ca.gov/services/city-services/bulky-item-pickup.
Hayward residents can also receive self-haul coupons each year. The coupon entitles its holder to free disposal of up to two cubic yards of material at the Davis Street Transfer Station in San Leandro. Mattresses, appliances, and tires are not eligible for free disposal with the coupons.
To request a coupon to self-haul to the transfer station at 2615 Davis St. in San Leandro, call (510) 537-5500 or pick one up at Waste Management's Hayward office at 22770 Main Street.
