City honored with Acterra Award for Environmental Leadership
Acterra recently presented an environmental award to the City of Hayward in recognition of the City’s achievements in producing green power at the Water Pollution Control Facility. The Facility now produces all of the energy it needs onsite through a combination of solar energy and cogeneration of power using biogas. In addition, the Facility produces enough surplus energy to offset the utility power for other City buildings, including City Hall.
Acterra, a respected environmental non-profit organization, presents annual Business Environmental Awards. These prestigious and competitive awards recognize and celebrate Bay Area corporate environmental leaders and public entities that demonstrate innovative sustainability programs and motivate others to adopt sustainable business practices. This year, the City of Hayward and Stanford University were the only non-business entities to receive these honors.
The awards were presented on May 26. The City was represented by Mayor Barbara Halliday, who gave Hayward’s acceptance speech, Council Member Al Mendall, Chair of the Council Sustainability Committee (CSC), and Council Member Elisa Márquez, a former CSC member. Also in attendance were the City Manager and some Utilities and Environmental Services staff members.
