Compost Hub at the Hayward Community Garden
Background
Senate Bill 1383 requires cities to buy a set amount of products made from recycled organic waste each year. For most cities, including Hayward, this means buying compost or mulch.
To meet this requirement, City staff are working with the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD) to create a compost hub. This site will allow Hayward residents to pick up free bulk compost or mulch throughout the year.
The proposed compost hub will be located in an undeveloped area of the Hayward Community Garden, with access from Berry Avenue.
Project Description
The proposed compost hub will use about one acre of undeveloped land at the Hayward Community Garden, which is operated by HARD. The site can be reached from an existing driveway on Berry Avenue.
Apartments are located to the east and west of the site, and the Eden Greenway is across Berry Avenue to the south.
This location was chosen because it is unused land and can be managed with help from a community partner, including the nearby community garden.
The compost hub will include a paved area with a gate and fence. It will have concrete bins to store compost and mulch. The fence will match the existing fence on Whitman Avenue. New landscaping will be added along Berry Avenue.
Construction will include paving, installing the bins, adding landscaping, and building the fence and gate. In the future, more features may be added, such as picnic tables or a shelter, depending on cost and the final plan.
