Tips for Enjoying Outdoor Activities Responsibly

May 28, 2024

As summer approaches, residents of Hayward look forward to the opportunity to engage in outdoor leisure activities. By incorporating sustainable practices into outdoor adventures, Hayward residents can ensure that future generations can enjoy the beauty of nature just as we do today.

When planning a picnic in the park or a BBQ, opting for reusable foodware is an effective way to reduce waste. Invest in durable plates, utensils, and cups that can be washed and reused for multiple occasions. If disposable options are needed, look for products that are BPI Certified compostable.

Hayward residents should make a habit of carrying reusable water bottles. Not only does this reduce plastic waste, but it also saves money in the long run. The City encourages residents to take advantage of water refill stations available in parks and recreational areas.

If camping, make sure to follow the regulations and guidelines set by the campground regarding campfires. Whenever possible, use established fire rings or fire pits. Use only small, dead, and downed wood for fires and avoid cutting live trees or branches. Always fully extinguish fires before leaving the campsite, ensuring they are cool to the touch.

When exploring the outdoors, adhere to the principle of "leave no trace." This means leaving natural spaces as pristine as you found them, or even better. Dispose of trash properly in designated bins, pack out what you pack in, and avoid disturbing wildlife or vegetation. By respecting the environment, we can preserve its beauty for future generations to enjoy.

By choosing reusable foodware, embracing reusable water bottles, and practicing Leave No Trace principles, Hayward residents can minimize environmental impacts while enjoying the great outdoors.
