Construction Begins

March 4, 2016

Work on Hayward’s 21st Century Library and Heritage Plaza project has begun. The old main library will remain open for regular business throughout the upcoming 20 months of construction. Thanks to Hayward voters who approved Measure C funding in 2014, the project is fully funded and now under way. The new library will be the most environmentally sustainable public building ever built in Hayward.

The project also includes the complete restoration of the historic Heritage Plaza and arboretum. Starting in January, visitors to the old main library will see construction activity on and around the project site, including C Street, the Plaza, and Mission Boulevard. Pedestrian access to the post office, old main library, and parking garage will be preserved, but in some places will be redirected around construction areas for safety. Please observe all posted signs. The safety of pedestrians, motorists, and construction workers is our top priority.

C Street will retain two through lanes of traffic during construction, but the lanes will be shifted to accommodate construction work. Please be alert and use caution when driving or walking in the area. Street parking will be temporarily unavailable in some areas during construction, but bus routes and bus stops will not be affected. Visit the project website for all the latest news and updates, including design renderings of the library project, and a live, 24/7 construction webcam.
