Spring 2024 Compost Giveaway

March 26, 2024

On Saturdays May 4th and 18th, the City of Hayward will offer Hayward households free compost during the City’s Spring Compost Giveaway.

To help serve more community members and minimize traffic, this year’s compost giveaway has been split into two days. Please only attend the event on the date indicated on the flyer you receive in the mail. Mailers have been color coded to help ensure that each household attends on the correct day.

Community members can visit the parking lot of the former Skywest Golf Course at 1401 Golf Course Road from 7:30am – 10:30am to receive four bags of locally produced WM EarthCareTM Homegrown Compost. There is a limited supply of compost, so it will be offered only while supplies last. This event is offered to Hayward households as part of the City’s Franchise Agreement with Waste Management of Alameda County. The compost is made in part from food scraps and yard trimmings collected from Hayward residents.

A waiver must be signed in order to receive compost. Waivers will be mailed to all Hayward households indicating which Compost Giveaway date residents should attend. Waivers can also be downloaded here, and will be available at the event. Traffic is often heavy at this event, so please be patient and considerate, and remember to enter the event from the south by using Skywest Drive and West A Street. Residents can carpool with neighbors.

Compost is a nutrient-rich soil amendment made of decomposed organic matter. It can improve moisture retention in soil, promote plant growth, and sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The City of Hayward is pleased to provide this resource to Hayward residents.
