New life for old Haymont

A vacant shopping center and gas station across the street from Holy Sepulchre Cemetery are to be torn down to make way for townhomes and apartments under a joint development project approved last month by the Hayward City Council.
The Haymont Shopping Center, at 26601 Mission Boulevard, is one of several catalyst sites identified in the city’s Economic Development Strategic Plan. Over the years, it had become vandalized, blighted and a site of illegal inhabitation. Earlier in 2017, a fire broke out at the property.
Under the project approved by the Council on Nov. 14, KB Homes will build 35 townhomes for sale, while DNS Capital Partners will construct a mixed-use development with 39 apartment unit rentals and 2,500 square feet of commercial retail space.
KB Homes and DNS Capital Partners have agreed to each provide for three units to be sold or rented at costs affordable to lower income residents—though it remains to be determined how the six affordable units will be distributed across the joint project.
In addition, KB Homes has promised to install solar energy systems to power the townhomes as well as townhome community common areas.
