Install a heat pump water heater, earn up to $2,300 back

July 28, 2020

Hayward residents can receive up to $2,300 in rebates and incentives when purchasing and installing an electric heat pump water heater (HPWH). HPWHs are all-electric, high-efficiency water heaters that use less energy and produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions than their gas-powered alternatives.

HPWHs transfer heat from the surrounding air as opposed to creating new heat, which is how gas-powered and other types of water heaters operate. This heat transfer process allows HPWHs to be up to four times more efficient than other water heaters, resulting in reduced energy bills.

Because HPWHs run on electricity, they also produce none of the indoor-air pollutants or emissions released by gas-powered water heaters, which burn fossil fuels. HPWHs can even operate on 100 percent renewable energy when paired with solar or when residents choose to power their homes with the 100 percent renewable electricity offered by East Bay Community Energy.

Local and Federal HPWH incentives can save customers thousands on their HPWH upgrades. Homeowners can receive $1,000 back through the BayREN Home+ program when the install is performed by a participating contractor, and an additional $300 in Federal tax credits[1]. Contractors performing the install can also receive an additional $1,000 from BayREN.
