The City is committed to creating a more sustainable community and to recognize those who go the extra mile to reduce Hayward’s environmental footprint. “We know there are businesses and community members doing remarkable things in the area of sustainability. We want to help them tell their stories and inspire others throughout the community to do their part”, said Mayor Barbara Halliday. Award winners will be recognized at a City Council meeting and receive a certificate of recognition from the Mayor and City Council.
Award recipients in 2016 included the Hayward Area Senior Center, a Certified Green Business committed to a comprehensively sustainable facility, and Alphabet Energy, which not only engineers an efficient generator, but partners with local schools to teach students about sustainable technology. Also in 2016, Longwood Elementary School was one of several schools recognized for their commitment to sustainability by teaching students about creative renewable energy solutions like solar cookers and bicycle-powered blenders.
