February 11, 2020

The Hayward Shoreline

The 2020 Census begins in Hayward and across the country next month when households start receiving U.S. Census Bureau mail with instructions on how to complete the Census questionnaire online, by phone or by mail.

A count of the entire U.S. population every 10 years, the Census is required by the U.S. Constitution and participation is mandatory.  Data collected during the Census is used to determine how seats in the U.S. House of Representatives are apportioned among the 50 states.

It also is used to determine how federal funding of health, housing, education, nutrition and transportation services is distributed across the country.  Additionally, the data is used to produce statistics used by researchers, policy makers and in investment decisions.

By law, your individual responses to the Census questionnaire and the personal information you provide are kept anonymous and strictly confidential by the Census Bureau, and may not be shared with or used against you by any government agency or court.
