New retail transformed former K-Mart site in 2024
Hayward turned out on a Friday morning in September to celebrate the opening of Sprouts Farmers Market at Mission Boulevard and West Harder Road, completing a decades-long effort to bring a specialty grocery store to Hayward.
The new Sprouts, which opened its doors at 7 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27, now anchors the new Hayward Retail Center on the grounds of the old K-Mart site. Spouts joined new Raising Cane’s, In-N-Out Burger and Starbucks locations at the Center with Ross and Home Goods stores on the way.
The arrival of Sprouts, one of the fastest growing retailers in the country, expands access to fresh, healthy food options, creates more than 100 new local job opportunities and boosts City revenue to support core municipal services.
The occasion was kicked off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, drawing more than 650 attendees, and was celebrated all weekend long with a variety of activities, including contests, giveaways and seasonal produce tastings.
In announcing the opening the month prior, Sprouts said the new store—open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.—will donate groceries no longer fit for sale but perfectly edible and nutrient-rich to the Alameda County Community Food Bank.
