New hillside park coming to South Hayward

July 10, 2018

La Vista Park Vista Point and Play Lawn

A new 50-acre hillside park is moving from drawing board to reality in South Hayward with the City of Hayward and Hayward Area Recreation District reaching agreement to close a project funding gap and approving a final park design.

The new La Vista Park will take shape north of the extension of Tennyson Road east of Mission Boulevard and is planned as an active and passive recreation destination for the entire city—with 180-degree-plus San Francisco Bay views from a ridge trail, sports fields and courts, an amphitheater, yoga lawn and much more.

The park project will remake and reclaim for public use the old La Vista Quarry.  It was originally planned as part of the 2005 city approval of a 179-home subdivision on land next to the quarry by the quarry owner, DeSilva Gates, of Dublin.  As part of the development agreement, DeSilva Gates is required to contribute up to $2.14 million to the now estimated $23.5 million cost of the park project—but only incrementally as each new home is sold.

With La Vista housing construction finally under way—by homebuilder D.R. Horton, of Pleasanton—the City Council and Hayward Area Recreation District Board of Directors have identified the remainder of the project funding.  The recreation district is committing voter-approved Measure F1 bond proceeds and the city is pledging park “in lieu” fees on several future real estate development projects.
