Input sought on new city revenue strategies
Hayward residents are being invited this month to provide input on a pair of proposals to increase revenue for city police, fire, paramedic, library and other basic public services.
Specifically, the city is considering two November ballot measures—one to increase the Transient Occupancy Tax, paid by hotel guests in Hayward, and the other to increase the Real Property Transfer Tax, which is paid at the time of purchase of a piece of commercial, industrial or residential real estate in the city.
Both measures are under consideration as ways to close projected city budget deficits without increasing the cost of living for Hayward residents.
A City Council decision on whether to place one or both of the tax increases on the Nov. 6 ballot is expected in July. Each measure would need the approval of a majority of voters.
