City of Hayward affirms sanctuary status and shares legal resources related to federal immigration enforcement

HAYWARD, Calif., June 11, 2019—The City of Hayward is a sanctuary city that does not participate in the enforcement of federal immigration laws and is committed to equal treatment of its residents and workforce regardless of immigration status.

As a sanctuary city, Hayward recognizes the importance of trust-building between all segments of our community, the Hayward Police Department and other facets of city government as a public health and safety strategy.

As part of that strategy, the Police Department and other City agencies do not ask for, collect or maintain information specific to the immigration status of members of the Hayward public.

Similarly, the City opposes approaches to federal immigration enforcement that unnecessarily threaten or undermine trust between immigrant community members and local law enforcement.

Mass immigration raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reportedly in the works for this coming weekend is an immigration enforcement approach that threatens the trust and sense of safety the City has sought to foster and maintain with members of our immigrant communities.

The City has been provided no direct information about and will not participate in any such raids.
