May Extend City Water to Russell

Possibility of extending city's water lines to Russell City was voiced by Councilman John Haar at the Monday night council meeting.
Haar asked City Engineer (und newly appointed public works administrator) Hugh Gallaber to study the costs of extending water lines, to Russell City, and asked the cost of moving the Jackson street pumping station to a high point near Mt. Eden.
Haar told the council that a talk with Supervisor George Janssen indicated that the county will help finance extention of a water, line to Russell City.
Object of moving the pumping station would be to gain more 12 inch transmission water line. Eventually, Haar told the council, the station would serve 600 acres from Hesperian boulevard to the Southern Pacific tracks.
Other action taken by the council in a lengthy session before more than 50 spectators included:
Heard a treasurer's report listing $586,327.00 on hand August 1 as compared to $557,560.41 on July 1.
Authorized hanging of a banner across B street by All Saints church advertising the coming of a fiestá.
Referred to the planning commission a request by Harry Carr that B street be renamed Broadway.
Accepted an offer by the Hayward Poultry Producers for purchase of approximately 426 sacks of barley from the city at $2.05 per hundred pounds.
Ordered Pollee Chief George G. Forth to investigate parking conditions along lower A street and report his recommendations to the council at its next meeting.
Authorized the hiring skilled or unskilled laborers by the Water department as the need arises. Skilled laborers will be paid the prevailing union wages.
Ordered the installation of a valve on the Hetch Hetchy transmission line where the line crosses a line from, the Niles reservoir. Permission to connect to the reservoir line will be sought in order that Hayward can have a standby supply in the event of a temporary halt in Hetch Hetchy flow.
Authorized the Water department to install a six inch main line from Jackson to Sycamore along Silva as part of the obligation to supply the Muir district.
Ordered the city engineer to proceed with Claren street improvements as soon as possible.
Offered free swimming to employes [sic] of the city during their annual picnic at Memorial park, Monday.
