New library, community garden openings Sept. 14
Hayward’s new 21st Century Library and Community Learning Center will open for regular operations and a community open house on Saturday, Sept. 14. The program will include live music, crafts, and library tours in English, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.
Construction of the new main library and Heritage Plaza on the site of the old main library is being financed through the Measure C half-cent sales tax passed by Hayward voters in June 2014.
Meanwhile, the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD) will host a ribbon cutting from 10 to 11:30 a.m. to celebrate the opening of the new Hayward Community Garden located at Whitman Street and Berry Avenue.
Gardening plots are still available to the public. Individuals and community-based groups may apply to rent a plot for a two-year period. Funded by the Measure F1 bond, the project represents Phase 1 of a Community Garden master plan that envisions 70 garden plots with irrigation, raised beds, a small orchard, shade structure to accommodate outdoor classes, produce counter, seed library, demonstration garden, storage shed, compost, small greenhouse, pathways, and fencing and gates.
