Hayward to hold online Town Hall meeting on local police-community relations

HAYWARD, Calif., June 4, 2020— The new Hayward Community Advisory Panel to the Chief of Police will hold its first public meeting starting at 6 p.m. on Monday, June 8, in the form of a special online Town Hall-style webinar and teleconference.

The meeting is intended to provide an opportunity for honest dialogue about police-community relations in Hayward.  It will be hosted by Advisory Panel members and Mayor Barbara Halliday, and will be facilitated by Police Chief Toney Chaplin and City Manager Kelly McAdoo.

This special event is being held online rather in person due to the ongoing COVID-19 public health emergency, and restrictions on public gatherings contained in the current Alameda County Health Officer shelter-in-place order.

The event also will be broadcast and livestreamed over KHRT cable TV channel 15 and through the City of Hayward website.

The Community Advisory Panel was established in 2019 to improve trust and strengthen understanding between the Hayward Police Department and community members by creating a structure and venue for open and honest dialogue.

Following the formal swearing-in of Toney Chaplin as Hayward’s 15th Chief of Police on Oct. 3, the Advisory Panel held its first working meeting March 12, just as the COVID-19 health emergency was beginning to take hold across the San Francisco Bay Area.
