How it happened—Piano key crosswalks restored and transformed on Foothill Boulevard
November 18, 2024
In the early morning of Saturday, Oct. 5, pedestrians crossing Foothill Boulevard at B Street and drivers and riders rolling along the boulevard were the first to experience the artistic restoration and transformation of two of the longest crosswalks in the City of Hayward.
The project, which called for rejuvenating the faded piano key crosswalks on Foothill, was part of a broader 100-day program of physical improvements and beautification efforts led by the Hayward Economic Development Division.
The goal at Foothill and B was to create a safer and more inviting entry point to downtown with minimal impact on pedestrians and vehicle traffic.
To make it happen, the Hayward Maintenance Services Department worked with a private company to redesign the original white paint and asphalt piano keys—but this time using a second-generation thermo-plastic with a longer life span.
And then the Maintenance Services team got to work—as seen here through the lens of Hayward Audio Visual Specialist and Videographer Bolthar Garcia. Have a look and listen.
