Volunteers needed for Hayward Point in Time Count
The City of Hayward is seeking community volunteers to assist with a visual count of individuals experiencing sheltered and unsheltered homelessness that is scheduled to take place from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22.
The Point in Time (PIT) Count of people experiencing homelessness takes place every two years in partnership with Alameda County and by communities across the country. It provides valuable information, helping us learn more about who is homeless in Hayward and what their service needs may be.
PIT Count results also are important for informing state, federal and county funding allocations to cities, so it is vital we get an accurate count.
To get an accurate count, we need volunteers. Volunteers can sign up as individuals or can specify a team name to be grouped with others (e.g. "Smith Family") and will be assigned specific areas of Hayward to visit for the PIT Count. Volunteers will use an app to count individuals and conduct surveys of people being counted. There will be trainings on Jan.14 and Jan. 20, so it's important to sign up sooner than later so you can attend a training.
If you or others you know are interested in volunteering, please register here. Make sure to specify Hayward as your primary choice for counting. If you have questions about the PIT Count, please contact Amy Cole-Bloom, Hayward Community Services Manager, at amy.cole@hayward-ca.gov.
