Sustainable gardening is a great way to care for the environment while also creating productive and inviting outdoor spaces. By using eco-friendly practices, gardeners can reduce waste, conserve water, and support local ecosystems. Hayward residents can take advantage of the City’s free Compost Giveaways that happen semi-annually in the spring and fall to improve their soil health. Make sure to mark your calendar for the next Compost Giveaway, which will be Saturday, May 9th, 2026, at 1401 Golf Course Road from 7:30 am to 10:30 am (while supplies last).

Gardeners can use techniques like harvesting rainwater for watering plants instead of using treated drinking water. Consider adding organic mulch or ground cover plants to provide nutrients to soil, suppress weeds, and retain moisture.  Switching to drip irrigation delivers water directly to the plants’ roots and minimizes water loss. Bear in mind that watering your plants is best early in the morning or late in the evening to minimize water loss.  Choosing native or drought resistant plants can also further reduce watering needs. See how you can leverage recycled materials like reclaimed wood or repurpose items like food containers and buckets for planters to help cut down on waste. Also, take advantage of the Downtown Hayward Library’s Seed Lending Library to “check out” a wide variety of vegetable and floor seeds and contribute your own seeds.

Not sure where to start? The Bay Area Water Supply & Conservation Agency (BAWSCA) offers free classes and hands-on workshops for residents on topics like sustainable landscaping, alternatives to lawns, habitat gardening, edible landscaping, water-efficient irrigation practices, parent and child gardening workshops, and more! These workshops teach practical skills for creating water-wise, environmentally friendly gardens. To learn more and register for upcoming workshops visit BAWSCA Landscape Classes.

By practicing sustainable gardening techniques, Hayward residents can grow healthier gardens while helping to conserve resources and protect the environment.
