Hayward Police to stage major pre-Halloween operation
More than 250 local kids selected for costume giveaway. Spookiness anticipated.
(HAYWARD, CA) – The Hayward Police Department anticipates a rash of spooky behavior, including vampire activity and potential zombie hordes this Halloween following their 5th annual costume giveaway for disadvantaged local kids. More than 250 children will be participating in tomorrow’s event, including the Hayward Promise Neighborhood Community.
“As a matter of policy, we try not to contribute to the zombification of local youth,” said Hayward PD Community Service Officer Marcia Zimmerman. “But there’s a lot of candy at stake here, and every kid deserves a great costume on Halloween.”
The annual event, held from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 29 at Hayward City Hall, is not open to the public. Children are selected by their elementary school instructors or by their school’s parent liaison. After the kids receive their costumes, they will have the opportunity to trick-or-treat at 19 local merchants in Downtown Hayward.
The Police Department isn’t alone in their effort to brighten Halloween for Hayward families. The event is made possible through generous donations from the following:
- American Licorice Company, Union City
- Annabelle Candy Company, Hayward
- Party City, Union City & Dublin
- Lucky’s Grocery Store, Hayward
- Hayward Police Chief Diane Urban
- Hayward Police Officers Association
- Local anonymous residents
Members of the media are warmly invited to this closed event to help us spread the smiles and goodwill.
