Homicide Investigation – One in custody for homicide that occurred near 2000 block of American Avenue
HAYWARD, Calif., On October 23, 2024, at about 2010 hours, officers responded to the 2000 block of American Avenue after receiving a request to do a welfare check on a father and son.
Family members expressed concern about the father and son after the father had not reported to work earlier in the day and was not answering his cell phone.
Officers arrived on scene, but there was no answer at the door. A record check of the warehouse revealed the son, later identified as 25-year-old David Sanchez, was on formal probation with a search clause.
Officers entered the warehouse, conducted a protective sweep, and did not locate anyone inside. During the protective sweep, officers located evidence of a crime scene that was believed to be the scene of a shooting homicide.
Detectives responded and continued the investigation, attempting to locate the father and Sanchez. Through the course of the investigation, probable cause was developed to determine David was responsible for the homicide of his father.
On October 24, 2024, Hayward Police Department Communications Center received a phone call from the Oakland Police Department, stating they had Sanchez in their custody for an incident unrelated to this investigation. Oakland PD requested we conduct a welfare check of Sanchez’s father based on statements Sanchez made during their investigation.
Hayward PD Detectives advised Oakland PD Officers about homicide investigation already underway and took custody of Sanchez who was placed under arrest on suspicion of murder.
Detectives spoke with Sanchez who disclosed the location where his father was. Detectives responded to the 33000 block of Central Avenue in Union City where they located the father/victim, a 58-year-old male, deceased, in a dumpster.
The victim's name is not being released at this time, pending formal identification protocols by the Alameda County Coroner’s Office.
This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information related to the homicide is asked to call Detective Navas at 510-293-7176.
The Hayward Police Department case number is 2024-60466. This was Hayward’s 13th homicide of 2024.
