Hayward seeks public input for Climate Action Plan update

March 22, 2022

The City of Hayward is currently updating its Climate Action Plan (CAP), a plan to meet emission reduction goals and maximize Hayward’s environmental and social sustainability. Originally adopted by the City Council in 2009, then updated and incorporated in the City’s General Plan in 2014, this second CAP update will set the City on a path to reach carbon neutrality by 2045.

A successful CAP improves the quality of life for all residents by creating co-benefits, including lower energy costs, reduced air pollution, local economic development, and increased community resilience. Historically marginalized communities are often affected first and worst by the climate crisis. In response, the City is focusing on racial equity in the climate planning process and asking for community input along the way. In addition to the CAP update, the City is also updating the Housing Element of the General Plan and preparing a new Environmental Justice Element.

The City of Hayward will host a virtual workshop to collect public input on its proposed strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through CAP measures and actions on April 13, 2022 at 6:30 p.m. Attendees may register for the event here.
