Hayward voters will elect a new Mayor and two new City Council members in today’s municipal election.

Councilmember Mark Salinas is the lone candidate on the ballot to succeed Mayor Barbara Halliday who chose not to seek reelection.  Halliday is retiring from City elective office after 32 years of service to Hayward as a Council-appointed commissioner, two-term Councilmember and two-term Mayor.

Meanwhile, eight candidates are vying to replace outgoing Councilmembers Sara Lamnin and Aisha Wahab—both of whom chose not to seek reelection to the seven-member City Council.

Following certification of the election and swearing-in of the new Mayor and Councilmembers, the new Council will have the option to either appoint someone or call a special election to fill Salinas’ vacated Council seat and complete the final two years of the term.
