Arrest made in 2019 homicide that occurred near Santa Clara Way and Yolo Street
HAYWARD, Calif., On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, Hayward Police Department Detectives arrested 23-year-old Oakland resident Emmanuel Padilla Maciel, in connection with a homicide that occurred in 2019.
On Saturday, December 7, 2019, at about 4:45 p.m., Hayward Police Department officers responded to the report of a shooting in the area of Santa Clara Way and Yolo Street.
Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive male suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel responded and pronounced the man deceased at the scene.
The victim was identified as 20-year-old Hayward resident, John Creech Jr.
Following the homicide, detectives pursued every investigative lead and worked diligently until information was developed that led them to the identification of Padilla Maciel as the person believed to be responsible for the murder of Creech Jr.
On June 2, 2022, an arrest warrant for Padilla Maciel was requested by the Hayward Police Department and was granted by an Alameda County Judge.
On February 23, 2023, a second warrant was issued for Padilla Maciel by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
Padilla Maciel was ultimately taken into custody by the United States Customs and Border Protection on Friday, April 14, 2023, after he traveled into the United States from Mexico where a record check revealed his outstanding District Attorney warrant. The Hayward Police Department took custody of Padilla Maciel on April 19, 2023.
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has charged Padilla Maciel with murder. Padilla Maciel was booked at the Hayward Police Department Jail and will later be transferred to the Santa Rita County Jail where he will be held without bail.
