Stay Safe During Extreme Heat Events
Cities around the world are seeing an increase in extreme heat events. The City of Hayward has in place several emergency cooling centers that can be mobilized in an extreme heat event.
Extreme heat waves can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke, exhaustion, and dehydration. Warmer temperatures create more pollen in the air, stronger airborne allergens, and more allergy symptoms. Certain populations such as the elderly, children, people with disabilities and those living alone are at a higher risk during heat events.
When the temperature is over 100 degrees on any given day, or the temperature is estimated to be over 95 degrees for three consecutive days, Hayward Cooling Centers may be activated. These emergency events will be announced via social media, our official e-newsletter, The Stack, and AC Alert.
