Learn how to save on energy bills with your time-of-use rate plan

July 23, 2024

To help reduce emissions and save money this Summer, the City of Hayward encourages residents to lower their energy use at peak times. PG&E has transitioned most residential customers to time-of-use (TOU) rates. With TOU rates, the price of electricity increases during peak hours, typically between the hours of 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. There are a few TOU rate plans to choose from. Visit PG&E’s website and check your latest bill to ensure you are enrolled in the plan that is best for your household.

Here are some ways to take advantage of TOU Rates:

  • Operate washing machines and dishwashers outside of peak hours.

  • Pre-cool your home before peak demand hours.

  • Set the thermostat for your air conditioner at a higher temperature during peak hours.

  • Use the timer feature on your appliances. Many washing machines and dishwashers have a delay start feature. Set the cycle to begin outside of peak hours.

  • Turn off the lights when you leave a room.

  • When purchasing new appliances and lighting for your home, look for the Energy Star logo. These products will help you reduce your energy use.
