Education City in action: the Hayward Fire Department and Eden Area ROP

A partnership between the Hayward Fire Department and Eden Area Regional Occupational Program (ROP) is a quintessential example of how local government and education can team up for the greater good.

Since 2014, Hayward high school students have had the opportunity to receive hands on training in firefighting and emergency medical technician skills—and discover a pathway to a career that otherwise might not have been available to them.

Meanwhile, the Hayward Fire Department is getting to access to homegrown talent as potential recruits and helping to shape the next generation of firefighting and emergency medical service professionals.

It’s become the realization of a vision of recently retired Hayward Fire Chief Eric Vollmer, and it is meant by Hayward as an Education City.

To share with our community what’s been happening, Hayward videographer Bolthar Garcia worked with HFD to make this video.
