3,500 bags of locally-sourced compost given to Hayward households at Compost Giveaway

November 23, 2021

On Saturday, October 30, following a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Hayward hosted its ninth Compost Giveaway event, distributing free bags of organic-certified compost to more than 800 participating residents.

This year’s event was held in the parking lot of the former Skywest Golf Course, next to the Hayward Airport. City of Hayward Environmental Services staff checked in residents and answered questions while Maintenance Services staff loaded cars, keeping the line moving quickly throughout the three-hour event.

The free compost is offered to Hayward residents as part of the City’s solid waste franchise agreement with Waste Management of Alameda County. The compost is created in-part from food scraps and yard trimmings collected from Hayward residents and businesses, closing the loop in the organics recycling process.

The next Compost Giveaway will be held in the spring of 2022. Updates regarding the next event, once available, will be announced in future issues of The Leaflet and at www.hayward-ca.gov/compost.
