Thinking about Replacing Your Lawn? Resources for Water Wise Gardening

September 26, 2023

Did you know that lawns use 50% of the average home's outdoor use? The good news: eligible Hayward residents can receive up to $0.75 for every square foot of lawn converted to water wise landscaping!

To qualify for the Lawn Conversion Rebate Program, Hayward water customers must provide a plant list and planting plan showing the new, proposed layout of the lawn area in advance. The City will review the application, conduct a quick on-site inspection of the lawn, and provide approval to begin work. For more information on allowable plant species, permeable paving, and irrigation requirements, please refer to the Lawn Conversion Rebate Program Brochure and Application

The City offers several programs to help Hayward community members transition their existing landscaping into thriving, eco-friendly, drought-resistant gardens.

Free classes and hands-on workshops are offered through the Bay Area Water Supply and Conservation Agency (BAWSCA). To see the full list of classes, visit the BAWSCA website and register to reserve your spot. Upcoming topics include:

  • Rainwater Harvesting and Rain Gardens (9/28)

  • Choosing Plants to Fit your Landscape Goals (11/1)

  • Edible Water-Wise Gardening (11/2)

  • Fall Landscaping Essentials (11/4)

  • Lawn Conversion 101 (11/4)

The City also provides free bags of compost to Hayward community members every spring and fall. The next giveaway is scheduled for November 4.

As drought conditions improve, the City encourages residents to continue using water wisely. For other sustainable landscaping resources, click here
