Creating affordable housing is vital to fostering a healthy, inclusive Hayward and ensures that people of all income levels, including essential workers, seniors, and families, have access to safe and stable homes.

The Hayward Affordable Housing Ordinance (AHO) helps create mixed-income residences that include below-market-rate (BMR) units and generates revenue used to subsidize development of housing restricted to a range of very-low to low-income households.

Development of affordable housing for rent or purchase is increasing in Hayward with 527 units in the pipeline (having received land-use approvals or under construction) on top of 325 units already added to the City’s affordable housing stock in recent years.

Allied Housing Depot Road project

Housing the Formerly Homeless:

In August, the City and nonprofit developer Abode Services celebrated the grand opening of Depot Community Apartments, a new residence of 125 micro apartments for formerly homeless and very low-income households in need of housing assistance with wrap-around supportive services.
