City of Hayward is celebrating Black History Month

February is Black History Month, and the City of Hayward has been celebrating by holding a series of presentations, classes and discussions.
On Feb. 6, the Hayward City Council formally declared February Black History Month in Hayward and marked the occasion by presenting a proclamation to organizations serving Black communities in Hayward—specifically, local chapters of Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA), Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
On Tuesday, Hayward Public Library (HPL) connected members and visitors to an online conversation held by the Library Speakers Consortium entitled Exploring Identity, Love and Being Black in America in Fiction Writing with award-winning author Jason Mott in discussion about his recent novel, Hell of a Book.
On Saturday, Feb. 24, in the Fremont Room in the Downtown Hayward Public Library, HPL will hold an African Americans in the Arts Panel discussion moderated by Vanita Lee-Tatum. Panelists will include Khristel Johnson (textiles, quilts), Saleem Gilmore (author, cartoonist), Russell Foote (photography), and Mark Sublett (mixed media).
