Ceremonial flag raising, proclamation to affirm support of LGBTQ+ community members
In recognition of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month, the City of Hayward will host a ceremonial raising of the Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride flag at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 12, at Hayward City Hall Plaza.
This most up to date version of the Progress Pride flag is flying at City Hall for the entire month of June, which is observed worldwide as LGBTQ+ Pride Month, commemorating the widely-recognized start of the Gay Rights Movement with the Stonewall Rebellion in New York City in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969.
On that date, bar patrons at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village area of New York fought back against a police raid, then a commonplace occurrence at bars catering to LGBTQ+ patrons, which led to six days of civil unrest. On the first anniversary of the rebellion, New York City’s first annual pride march was held.
Also, at its last meeting of the month on June 24, the Hayward City Council is scheduled to proclaim June as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Queer, Intersex, 2-Spirit and Gender Non-Conforming Pride Month in the City of Hayward.
The flying of the Pride Flag through the month of June, the ceremonial flag raising on June 12 and the planned June 24 City Council proclamation are intended to reaffirm the City of Hayward’s commitment to being an inclusive, equitable and compassionate community and to supporting visibility, dignity and equity of and for our LGBTQ+ community members.
