World Trade Center Tower beam installed at Hayward Regional Fire Training Center
The Hayward Fire Department honored first responders to the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center by installing a beam from one of the fallen New York City towers at its new Regional Fire Training Center.
The installation ceremony took place the morning of Sept. 10 during a break in construction of the new Training Center, a joint project of the City of Hayward and Chabot-Las Positas Community College District.
The new $60 million Center—being built on the grounds of Hayward Executive Airport—will become the new home of and allow for expansion of the Chabot College fire academy. It will consist of a campus with classrooms, offices, a training tower and facilities for practicing other types of urban search and rescue and emergency response, and a new Hayward Fire Station #6 serving surrounding neighborhoods and industrial areas west of Interstate 880.
At a time when firefighting personnel are being stretched thin across California, the project will put the City and Chabot College on the forefront of creating our next generation of first responders. And the World Trade Center beam will stand as a reminder of the spirit of the fire service.
